Credit To The Edit - Pilooski

There's been more than a hint of backlash of late about the surge in popularity of disco edits flooding record shelves and blogs in the past year. And it can't be denied that some of the criticism is deserved. For sure it's a lot easier to knock out a quick edit now that a reel-to-reel and razor blade are not essential entry requirements and when the original track is a rare find on vinyl the motivation seems less about the reinterpretation of an old track and more about just plain old boot-legging.

When re-interpretation is properly achieved, though, the edit remains a valid art form and the true craftsmen will continue to prosper beyond the current trend as the quality of the end product holds up. And this brings me neatly on to a man called Pilooski, the special guest at the next installment of Mister Saturday Night. The Frenchman has released a consistent output of top class reinventions of everyone from the Pointer Sisters to Elvis Presley and his D-I-R-T-Y soundsystem crew (whose party I was lucky enough to play in Paris last year) released a killer compliation of wonderful cosmic, chuggy off the wall edits last year.

This coming Saturday (May 30th) Mister Saturday Night presents Pilooski at a secret loft location in Williamsburg. Full details on how to get to the party are on the flyer above. But before that here's a few words I shared with the man himself...

Its been a while since you've played in New York. What can we expect from your gig at Mister Saturday Night?

i'll be down with "the funk....", i'll play for the ladies as usual...

There's been an explosion of disco re-edits over the past couple of years. What's your thoughts and feelings on this development and do you have a view on where its going to go next?

I've been lucky enough to travel a lot lately, & people give me edits from everywhere, Lately, i've been really into the arabic, lebanese disco edits, but i've never seen the edit culture as just being disco only anyway, i mean as long as it enables you to discover new cool songs, who cares about the music genre?

Which artists or producers are doing exciting things for you in dance music right now?

There's actually a lot out there...I quite like Siriusmo from Germany, he does clever electronic music, he's very "musical", i just heard the new Joakim lp yesterday, & it's great! I also really like Yvan Smagghe & Tim Paris new project called "it's a fine line", they sent me some fantastic tracks, it's very motivating...

What have you got planned for the rest of '09?

I did a few remixes, that should be out soon, for people like Jarvis Cocker, LCD soundsystem, and a few others, some new edits will be out soon, i just finished the Discodeine lp with my friend as well as remixes to be out in september, & i'm preparing a comp for Strut in the UK...

Not to sound unappreicative or anything, but when/will the set be available. I will reiterate that the sound was sick and I had a blast, despite wandering around hipstertown.
