Genre hopping can be a difficult thing. I love almost all forms of dance music and within reason I like to hear them played closely together quite possibly on the same night. But in my opinion too many jocks claim themselves to be eclectic or accessible for no reason other than a predilection to bounce carelessly from genre to genre with no thought for flow, intensity or transition.
For this reason I've always been a big fan of Trevor Jackson. His 2002 DJ Kicks mix CD brought together classic and contemporary house, techno and post punk in a entirely natural, fluid and thoughtful way. My admiration was further exalted by the glorious art work which the man himself designed for the release. Clearly a talented man.
As you may know already Trevor is our guest at Prime Time this coming Friday as we take the party to Studio B and join our good friends JDH and Dave P in a special Prime Time meets FIXED presentation. My interview with Trevor is right below but before we get to that I REALLY want to add mention of our other special guests - House of House who will be playing a special decks & fx live performance.
If you haven't checked it out already I implore you to purchase their "Rushing to Paradise" 12". Quite simply it is a release of epic proportions - the best thing I've heard in '09 and a track head and shoulder above everything out there now. Buy it here and listen to a small clip here.
And now for Trevor....
How the devil are you?
//pretty, pretty, pretty good
Do you miss the Output days?
//the good days yes, the bad ones not at all
What labels today are releasing exciting music for you?
//THRILL JOCKEY, TYPE, RASTER NORTON, STONES THROW, KINDISCH, FXHE, MATHEMATICS, MULE MUSIC, PHILPOT, AESTHETIC AUDIO, SOMETHING, PLAYHOUSE....so many!
Your DJ Kicks is seminal mix CD for many people, myself included. A few years on how do you view that mix?
//very proud of it, captured a moment in time perfectly for me, and would like to think exposed lots of diverse artists, labels & producers (both old and new) to a broader audience. people still seem to love it which is great considering it was released in 2002 it still seems to sound fresh as well as relevant.
What's in store for you in 2009?
//been concentrating much more on visual work recently, but this year should finally have the new playgroup album finished. i've been working on an exhibition of microscopic photographic details of favorite records from my vinyl collection that i hope to be showing in a few galleries around the world, as well as continuing to dj and remix when i find the time. been playing around with audio/visual performance experiments the past couple of years and thats something i would also like to develop more in 2009
Thanks! Looking forward to next week.
//a pleasure, see you next week....(that'll be this Friday!)
