HERCULES & LOVE AFFAIR - PRIME TIME DJ SET AND KIM ANN FOXMAN INTERVIEW

This coming Saturday November 1st, day of the dead, Prime Time proudly presents a special DJ appearance from Hercules & Love Affair's Andy Butler and Kim Ann Foxman.

The party will act as the after party for the Hercules & Love Affair show at Hammerstein Ballroom where they open up for The B52s alongside James Murphy and Pat Mahoney's Special Disco Version.

Following on from the extremely popular interview with Greg Wilson Kim kindly agreed to answer a few questions specific to herself, her thoughts on DJing and New York nightlife today...

Many people now know you from Hercules & Love Affair but you've been DJing and doing parties in NY for years. Can you tell us a little about your DJ background and what DJing means to you?

I used to be in the rave scene in SF and i started collecting records when i lived there. The music i play is very inspired by my days in San Francisco. I started Djing when I first moved to NY, Andew Butler and I became good friends at that time, we bonded over music a lot, particularly west coast djs, and classic house in general. He actually has a huge influence on my dj style and has exposed me to a lot of great records. He has been a mentor for me in that way and opened my ear to a lot of obscure music.

Djing to me is a way to really move people and give them an experience on the dancefloor, and also to expose people to music or music in a context that they haven't heard.

Your recent mix for Beats In Space was really re-freshing mesh of 1st and 2nd generation house music. Can you tell us a little about that mix?

I had a lot of fun with this mix. i generally like to play mostly classics. Some of these records are gems i discovered digging, some are classics that i used to freak out to on the dancefloor or that were on my rave mixed tapes, and some records Andrew Butler has given to me. Most of the music i play is old, or if its new, it usually sounds like it could be old. In this mix there are elements of classic house, acid, techno, disco, breakbeat, and even some elements of trance in a way.

How do you feel about New York and the dance music scene here?

I think the NY and dance music scene is coming back to life, especially compared to a few years ago when tragically no one was dancing an all you could find out was more rock and indie music. People are dancing again which im very happy about, and its a good time for good djs and dance music. On the flip side, anyone can be a dj now, and you have to know where to go out in NY and hear good music, because a lot these new djs dont have good references or they are all playing the same music.

And finally...you're also a jewelery designer. To you still find time to fit in design work with everything which has been going on for you lately?

I have been so busy with the Hercules and Love Affair tour that I honestly have not had so much time to work on jewels, but when I'm in town, i try to get as much done as i can, and put them in stores to sell while I'm gone. Music is my first passion, and I prefer to keep my jewels in just a few selected boutiques anyway, so I'm keeping up alright for now.

And for those that missed it last week Prime Time got off to a roaring start at Santos Party House with the amazing Greg Wilson. Check out this pics from the hoe down courtesy of Resident Advisor. Click here for the rest.
