Keeping Busy with Mister Saturday Night

Keeping fresh content flowing on this site has been really challenging over the past 4-5 months, primarily because of all the effort being directed to Mister Saturday Night and production products picking up steam.

Much of the interviews, mixes and promo material which was hosted here in the past now appears on the MSN blog so while I re-think the future of this site here's what's going on with Mister Saturday Night in the next two months. Lot's of good stuff!

Free Drinks & Omar S - New Years Eve With Mister Saturday Night

It's been an outrageously long time since I updated this blog. A New Years resolution will definitely be one of how to maintain regular content on here alongside New Release and the Mister Saturday Night site. But for now here is news of our New Years bash...

We're out of the single digits of the 2000s. Come say goodbye to the first decade of the third millineum (Anno Domini); we had a good time, and it deserves a good send-off. We're taking on the holiday with reckless abandon, tuning the killer sound system for maximum output, serving up free drinks all night long and playing the special, celebratory jams that are fit for the end of a decade.

And our special guest? His name is Omar S, and he's one of the best guests we've ever had at Mister Saturday Night or any other party we've thrown for that matter. We think he'll be in a particularly celebratory mood, as 2009 was pretty good to him: It was the year he released his Fabric mix (RA's vote for best mix CD for the year) and the year that he launched from being a staple of the Detroit underground to one of the most sought after DJs and producers in the world. He'll drop his first record right after the ball drops. Happy New Year, indeed.

1142 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn // 10p - late, late, late // advance tickets available at residentadvisor.net/mistersaturdaynight - $40 from December 1 to December 30 // $50 on the day of the party // $20 after 4a // more info // directions

Moodymann at a special Mister Saturday Night day time loft party

In just over a week and half Moodymann will be headlining a special day time edition of Mister Saturday Night. Last time he came to town for us, he ended up doing an impromptu late-night version of Freaky MF live with The Egyptian Lover providing backup on 808. The time before that he played radio DJ all night long, announcing nearly every song and shouting out people's birthdays. We never know what to expect with Kenny Dixon, Jr., and we wouldn't have it any other way.

This version of Mister Saturday Night is at 12-Turn-13, a Brooklyn loft with hardwood floors, hardwood ceilings, and a big, beautiful roof. Bloody marys, mimosas will be on hand... and feel free to bring your kids and your dogs! Its that kind of day.

Prowl Night

New Release, in the form of Justin Carter and I playing records, will be taking over Marcos Cabral's (he of Runaway fame) new weekly residency - 'Prowl Night' at The Blackout in Greenpoint for this Saturday while the man himself plays in LA.

Come by, it should be fun.

Tim Sweeney talks ahead of his Sunday Best appearance

For those even remotely interested in dance music in New York City Tim Sweeney should need no introduction. He's helmed Beats In Space, his radio show for showcasing the best in forward thinking dance music the world over, for almost 10 years now hosting the likes of Carl Craig, Optimo, Prins Thomas and Lindstrom. He's released mix CDs and edits on RVNG and of course his long standing association with DFA sees him work consistently with Tim Goldsworthy on edits, mixes and new productions.

He truly is a talented DJ and this Sunday he plays Sunday Best. We're very much looking forward to having him rock BKLYN Yard for the 4th but last party of the summer. But before all that he graciously agreed to share a few thoughts on whats happening with him right now..

Remind us how long BiS has been going now?

10 years this fall! I started it in 1999 when I came up to New York to
go to NYU (where I studied Music Technology and started interning for
DFA for class credit).

Are there any particular guests/shows which have been particularly memorable for you?

I still love the Superpitcher show from 2005. He was on form with the comments! Just a really funny show. I love all the emails I got with the Germans being upset that he couldn't translate this one word.

Brennan Green, of course, always likes to bring the ruckus. I think my favorite was the one from December 2006 when he played the Jerky Boys record. Having that on the radio in New York was perfect. Who would of thought Brennan Green could pull that off?

The tequila-infused party with TBD on election night of last year was a lot of fun too. We were just screaming the whole time as updates came in live about who was winning.

Ah man, so many good ones over the years.

Is there any particular guest or guests who you've always wanted to have who thus far have proved elusive?

Theo Parrish, Jeff Mills, Moodymann, Derrick May, Juan Atkins -- The detroit guys!! They like to be so elusive. Also: Idjut Boys, Cajmere, Ivan Smagghe, Dixon, Baldelli, Eye, etc.

What's going on with you on the edit and production front? Anything in the pipeline?

I'm always working on stuff... but I'm not sure what's happening with
it yet! We'll see.

You're playing Sunday Best this weekend, obviously. What's your view on night life in NY right now?

I think the summertime brings out some of the best parties in New York right now! After that though, it's really difficult in New York. There just aren't the venues or the crowds going out to support people. It's the perfect time for someone to really blow people out of the water with a great space, sound system, and well managed spot though.

What new music are you feeling right now?

So much stuff. Check http://www.beatsinspace.net/playlists for the recent guests I've had on the show and the music I've played. It just runs the gamut. Old Turkish music from Baris K and Afacan Sound System, all the great stuff coming from the Germans like Tensnake/Motor City Drum Ensemble/Lo Soul, everything from Mungolian Jet Set, etc.

Whats up next for Tim Sweeney?

I'm going to be starting up a little record label soon to help celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the radio show! Then lots more touring and more production work.
